SPORT AND SUNSCREEN Sunscreens are designed for different purposes. When buying a sunscreen, first ask yourself what are you going to be using it for? Is it for occasional sun exposure, tanning, swimming or outdoor sports use? How long is the outdoor exposure and what is the intensity of activity? Are you going to be sweating heavily or swimming, if so, for how long? The answer to these questions should inform your choice of sunscreen. Rather buy more than one type of sunscreen to perfectly fit your different UV exposure needs, than buy just one sunscreen and use it because it is the only one you have. If you do not match your sunscreen with your UV exposure needs, you compromise your protection and risk UV damage. I have two types of sunscreen. The first one I apply everyday alter my moisturiser regardless of whether it is summer or winter, sunny or not. The second is my sports sunscreen which I use when I'm going to be active (sweating or in the water) outdoors. My everyday sunscreen is a light, simple sunscreen formula. My sports sunscreen (SPF44) is sweatproof and waterproof. If you are using a sunscreen for outdoor sports use, then make sure the sunscreen has an effective waterproofing system. Sweat generally removes the sunscreen from your skin leaving you unprotected. Beads of sweat magnify the intensity of UV radiation. Make sure your sports sunscreen SPF is high enough and specifically designed to be sweatproof. A sunscreen must not block your pores or interfere with the sweating process. The sunscreen must not sweat off. A dead give-away that your sunscreen is not sweatproof is when your sweat burns your eyes. Sweat in your eyes doesn’t bum. A sweated-off sunscreen does! Water washes the sunscreen off your skin and reflection from the water surface as well as droplets of water on your skin, magnifies the intensity of UV radiation. The water-resistant nature of sunscreens varies from zero to 8+ hours, the average being about 20 minutes. Make sure your sunscreen is a high enough SPF and that it's water-resistant qualities match your water exposure requirements. Your skin is very thin and sensitive on your face, neck and the top of your chest. It is also an intensive sweat area. For sports use, make sure that this area is property protected with a sweatproof sunscreen. Don’t make the mistake of putting your sports sunscreen on your body and leaving your everyday sunscreen on your face and neck. The priority for your skin is that it is properly protected for UV exposure. All other sunscreen qualities and benefits are secondary. If your sunscreen’s re-application requirements do not suit your sport or lifestyle, then change your sunscreen. Ask the right questions when selecting a sunscreen in order to make the right sunscreen choice. UV damage lasts a lifetime! SOLRX Sunscreen Usage Guideline
1. Regardless of whether you have a sensitive skin or not, always test new products for skin allergies or irritation on a patch of your skin (preferably the inside of you arm just below the crease of your elbow), before applying on the rest of your face and body. If your skin itches or burns do not use the product - and let me know! 2. Your normal cleaning routine (products) will remove the sunscreen. 3. To allow time for the sunscreen to bond with your skin, apply your sunscreen at least 15 minutes BEFORE you go into the sun. The bonding process works best when your skin is dry i.e. not hot and sweaty. 4. Be focussed and generous when applying sunscreen. Rather apply too much sunscreen than too little. Having said this however a word of caution, don't slap clumps/layers of sunscreen onto your skin (as we did with the old Zinc products in the 80s). Clumps don't bond with the skin and will wash off or sweat off into your eyes! 5. If you use moisturiser, apply your sunscreen AFTER you apply your moisturiser. The antioxidants and other skin nutrition in your moisturiser (needed for a long day of UV exposure) will be better absorbed into your skin. In addition, your moisturiser, if applied after your sunscreen, may interfere with the skin-bonding process of the sunscreen. 6. If you massage with oils (or other creams) during the day, then reapply your sunscreen. The massage product may/will interfere with the skin-bonding process of the sunscreen. 7. Friction may interfere with the skin-bonding process of the sunscreen. So if you are wearing a backpack for example, take care to re-apply sunscreen on the areas underneath the shoulder strap. Pat yourself dry rather than vigorously rubbing with a towel. 8. There have been cases where medication has interfered with the efficacy of sunscreen. If you are taking medication, take care and carefully monitor your skin's response to UV exposure. The best approach is to assume you have NO protection, until you have confirmed otherwise. 9. The SolRX sunscreen is certified 8 hour waterproof in conjunction with the specific SPF sold. See the SPF44 Re-Application Time Table below, which shows how to determine your "SPF44 re-application time". The table shows that when using a SPF44 sunscreen, people who generally burn without sunscreen within 11 minutes of being in the sun, will need to re-apply sunscreen, at intervals shown in the table below i.e. before the 8 hour waterproof period expires. 10. When determining how long it takes for you to burn without sunscreen, the suggested approach is to work with your “worst case burn scenario" for your given situation at a specific point in time i.e. take all the possible variables into consideration (see next point). The time it takes for you to burn without sunscreen is not static across all situations. 11. "Worst case burn scenario" variables that need to be taken into consideration include the following:
12. See the SPF15 Re-Application Time Table below (SPF15 is for black skin types only), which shows how to determine your "SPF15 Re-application time". The table shows that when using a SPF15 sunscreen, people who generally burn without sunscreen within 32 minutes of being in the sun, will need to re-apply sunscreen, at intervals shown in the table below i.e. before the 8 hour waterproof period expires.
